Masdar City ‘impressive’
Masdar City, the world’s first ever city aiming to reach zero carbon emissions, meaning completely free of air pollution, is planned for a capacity of 45,000 people by 2025
“I want my country to know how advanced you are and I want the world to know that we are partnering with you,” said US State Secretary Hillary Clinton, referring to Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy investments. She was visiting Masdar City, which she found ‘impressive’.
“We are betting on you for clean energy,” she said, adding that the partnership between US and UAE for renewable energy is among the most important one to be established by the US for the future.
“Work here at Masdar can solve some of the most challenging issues for environmental and energy sustainability,” declared Clinton.
Fresh water depletion, oil reserves coming to an end, air pollution and Carbon emissions already causing a shift of climate are all questions that the US state secretary considers to be ‘specific’ for the Middle East, questions that Masdar will be able to answer. “Abu Dhabi will be the link between developed and developing countries for clean energy,” she said, adding that the US energy department and other energy institutions will give all their support to UAE’s clean energy efforts.
Dr Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, pointed out that most of Masdar’s investments are in solar power, and most of the foreign one comes from Spain and UK.
“All our investment is commercially viable,” he declared. “The more the regulatory framework for renewable energy is developed worldwide, the better our investments become.”
Masdar City, the world’s first ever city aiming to reach zero carbon emissions, meaning completely free of air pollution, is planned for a capacity of 45,000 people by 2025.
“For the time being we are still working on the model. Once we have the model, we will expand it,” Al Jaber told Khaleej Times.
