Abu Dhabi residents set to commute by trains in 2015
Residents of the UAE capital will be commuting on trams and metro in 2015, according to the emirate's ambitious multi-billion dollar transport infrastructure plan that was officially unveiled at a ceremony.
The plan has been developed in line with the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, following demographic and other studies. The Department of Transport revealed the time frame for the entire plan that includes a 130-km metro network on the entire island city and stretching to nearby islands and planned Capital City District, Abu Dhabi International Airport and other suburbs. The plan also includes 340-km tramway network, new bus services, waterway transport of ferries and water taxis, a high speed rail network connecting the emirates with other emirates and Saudi border and a about a 600-km freight railway line. According to the plan time frame, the first phase, which is already under way will be completed in 2015.
